Webmaster Article: Should You Spring For Customized Web Design or Do It Yourself?

Amazon ImageThe Internet has brought buyer and seller, fan and star, friend and foe, and all people in between together – in a digital sort of way. You can have friends all over the world whom you have never met, but may know a lot better than anyone that lives on your street.

The world is more open now and many use the Internet as a way to learn and reach out, but you cannot do that without web sites. If you have any intentions of setting up a site of your own, you have to decide if you want to pay for custom web design or if you want to go it alone. Remember, your site will be your way of connecting with the rest of the world.

Custom web design is a service or product that you can get from someone who is knowledgeable and skilled at designing web sites for all types of situations. If you want to have a site to hold pictures of your wedding, one that offers something for sale, a fan site, one you use as a blog, or one that may just be a great way to stay in touch with some people you love, you want a site that reflects that promise or purpose.

However, do you know if you should go it on your own, as some people can, or should you see if hiring someone would be a better option?

First, think about your experience with custom web design. Have you ever attempted to build a web site on your own? If not, but you are thinking about building one on your own, you may not realize how complicated that can be. In fact, most of the commercial web sites that you use online were built by those that have a degree in web design.

It is far more complicated than you may think. If you have some experience, you know your own limitations, so decide accordingly.

Secondly, decide the nature of your web site. If you are putting something up that is simple and just for fun, you may be able to go it on your own. However, if you are selling anything or trying to start something that you hope will have mass appeal, you are better of springing for custom web design.

In fact, if this is the case, you may want to hire someone that can not only build your site for you, but that can go in and make changes for you on a regular basis as well as always update your site so that it is new and appealing even as time goes on.

There are some companies that offer you the opportunity to do your own custom web design quickly, easily and professionally. Well, they sort of do. You can find business sites that you pay for and add your own touches.

These are not going to be glamorous, awe-inspiring sites, but they will get the job done if you need a simple yet attractive and professional web site. These sites are great for beginners or those that want to run their own site without having to put too much time into it. They are perfect for the small business owner and may be perfect for you as well.

  1. The days of building your own website are all but gone. You need a capable designer. The are web standards and doctypes to consider, but now we are experiencing a shift towards responsive design. Users are leaving the desktop in favor of their mobile devices. Even newer browsers (especially the webkit browsers) are not kind to the old ways, even on the desktop. It’s unfortunate in many ways, but definitely the wave of the future. You can put up a simple site, but professional? I don’t think so. Sorry.
